Honey.

Why raw?

Honey the way nature intended.

Commercial honey is often heated and finely filtered so it stays runny on the shelf. Raw honey skips all of that. It goes from the comb to the jar with nothing added and nothing taken away. That makes it a simple, wholesome choice for the whole family.

  1. 01

    One ingredient

Just honey. No added sugar, syrups or preservatives, and nothing you can’t pronounce.

  2. 02

    Never heat-treated

Heat can dull honey’s natural enzymes, aroma and flavour. Raw honey keeps them.

  3. 03

    Unfiltered

We strain out bits of wax, not the goodness. The natural pollen stays in.

  4. 04

    A smarter sweetener

Stir it into tea, porridge and yoghurt, or swap it for sugar in baking. You’ll usually need a little less.

  5. 05

    Crystals are a good sign

Raw honey naturally sets over time. It hasn’t gone off. Stand the jar in warm water and it softens again.

Please don’t give honey of any kind to babies under 12 months.

Our honey

Ten honeys. Ten landscapes.

Every honey tastes of the flowers the bees visited. Here they are, from delicate to bold.

Hive to home

Five simple steps. No shortcuts.

Raw honey is mostly about what we don’t do. Here’s everything that happens between the flower and your spoon.

  1. White beehives beside golden canola fields
    01

    Forage

Our bees gather nectar from canola fields, orchards, fynbos and wildflowers. What they visit decides how the honey tastes.

  2. Gloved hands lifting a frame of capped honeycomb from a hive
    02

    Harvest

We lift frames the bees have filled and sealed with wax. The capping is their sign that the honey is ripe.

  3. Raw honey flowing from an extractor through a strainer
    03

    Extract

The comb is uncapped and spun, and the honey runs through a simple strainer. No heat. No fine filtering.

  4. A glass jar being filled with golden honey
    04

    Jar

Each variety is jarred on its own and labelled by name, so you know exactly which flowers you’re tasting.

  5. Honey drizzled over buttered toast at a breakfast table
    05

    Home

Onto toast, into tea, over porridge and pancakes. Or straight off the spoon, which is our favourite.

Honey on tap

Bring your own jar. We’ll fill it.

Our honey-on-tap pods pour Wildflower, Sandveld and Karoo straight into any clean container you bring. Taste all three, choose your favourite, and fill up by the kilogram. Same pure honey, less packaging.

  1. 1Bring a clean, dry container. A jar, a tub or a bucket.
  2. 2Try the tasters and pick your honey.
  3. 3We fill it straight from the tap and weigh it.

Seasonal

Honeycomb

Straight from the frame and totally unprocessed. Honeycomb comes with our peak harvest, towards the end of the year and into the new year. Ask us when it’s in.

Beyond the jar

Working beekeepers, all year round.

Alongside the farm shop, VitaBee and Klapmutskop Byeboerdery look after hives, crops and the bees themselves.

Pollination services

Strong, healthy colonies placed in orchards and seed crops at bloom time. Every spring our girls get to work on the almond blossom, and canola season keeps them busy through late winter.

Beekeeping equipment

Starting out or scaling up? Our shop stocks the equipment you need to keep your own bees. Come in for a chat, too. We’re always happy to share what we’ve learned from our own hives.

For everyone

Swarm season

Spotted a swarm? No need to panic. Swarming is natural, and the bees often move on within hours or a day or two. Keep a safe distance. If they settle into a structure or start building comb, call a registered beekeeper.

Respect. Protect. Appreciate.

Questions

Good questions.

Something else? Call 079 473 3654 or email us.

Is raw honey safe for children?

Yes, for children over one year old. Honey of any kind, raw or not, should never be given to babies under 12 months.

Why has my honey gone thick or crystallised?

That’s completely natural, and it’s a hallmark of real, raw honey. Some varieties, like canola, set faster than others. To soften it, stand the jar in warm (not boiling) water and stir. Please don’t microwave it.

What is creamed honey?

Our creamed honey is canola honey, whisked as it crystallises so the crystals stay tiny and smooth. Nothing is added. It spreads like butter, and a spoonful stirred into warm tea or coffee melts straight back to runny honey.

How do I choose between the varieties?

Each honey tastes of the flowers the bees foraged, from delicate Lucerne to robust Karoo. Lighter honeys suit baking and everyday sweetening, and deeper honeys have more character. Pop in and try the tasters at our honey-on-tap station.

Can I bring my own container?

Please do. Our honey on tap (Wildflower, Sandveld and Karoo) can be filled into any clean, dry container. We weigh it and you pay by the kilogram.

Do you sell honeycomb?

Yes, in season. Honeycomb comes with our peak harvest towards the end of the year and into the new year. Ask us in store or give us a call to check.

How should I store honey?

Keep it tightly closed at room temperature, out of direct sun. There’s no need to refrigerate. Cold actually speeds up crystallisation.

Do you offer pollination services?

We do. We place strong colonies in orchards and seed crops at bloom time. Email konstanz@vitabee.co.za or call 082 378 5570 to talk about your farm.
